  American Slave Narratives
(American Slavery: A Composite Autobiography)
Access Info: Ohio U. - Athens campus only (including off-campus access)

Database containing the complete text of narratives of African-American slaves.

From one of the introductory pages: "Between 1936 and 1938, the WPA Federal Writers' Project hired field workers to collect the life histories of former slaves. Transcripts for 2,000 interviews, from seventeen states, were then compiled by the Library of Congress."

In 1972, George Rawick assembled the Library's collection--over 10,000 typescript pages--in The American Slave: A Composite Autobiography.
