The MapMachine combines in one package the elements of a gazetteer, an atlas, and the creation of interactive maps. Users can search by place or term with the results presented on a map, or can zoom in on a world map to locate desired spot or region. Then for the area selected, or searched, the user can overlay themes such as political, ecological and cultural elements, climate, or statistical/social factors.
The site as sections on Mars, historical maps, and 'Flags and Facts' provides brief profiles of countries, and of states within the United States and Canada, accompanied by maps. This and the main National Geographic site are good for classroom resources and use (K-12 in particular).
Also of potential interest are the complete National Geographic magazine (indexed) and all maps produced by the Society. The magazine and a collection of maps are availble on CD-ROM. Please inquire at the Map Collection on the first floor of Alden Library.
