Established after the Civil War, the "Freedmen's Bureau" resembled in many ways the work of later Federal social agencies. In rebuilding the South tasks included establishing and supervising schools; disposition of abandoned or confiscated lands; issuing rations, clothing, and medicine to destitute refugees and freedmen (African Americans); establishing hospitals and dispensaries; and supervising camps and settlements for the homeless. Bureau officers worked with benevolent and philanthropic organizations.
Types of records filmed include letters sent and received, telegrams, reports sent and received, endorsements sent, issuances, form reports, assorted registers. Arrangement of records vary, note roll guides. You may also wish to consult the "Preliminary Inventory of Records..." of the Bureau.
