Proceedings of the Old Bailey   Full-Text

A fully searchable online edition of the largest body of texts detailing the lives of non-elite people ever published, containing accounts of over 100,000 criminal trials held at London's central criminal court.

The text is searchable by keyword, the name of the defendant, victim, judge and by 55 specific types of crime. In addition to the re-keyed text of the proceedings, digital images of 60,000 originals are provided. A section on notable trails allows access by various categories: crime, policing, punishments, london life, gender and commumnity histories. These cases were chosen because they are brief and exemplary, not necessarily because they are well-known.
