  Dictionary of the History of Ideas    

A digitized version a set of books published in 1973 whch covers major concepts in the Western tradition across a range of disciplines, including philosophy, religion, politics, literature, and the biological, physical, and social sciences. Here is a brief outline of the broad subject areas included:

  1. NATURE: The history of ideas about the external order of nature studies by the physical and biological sciences, ideas also present in common usage, imaginative literature, myths about nature, metaphysical speculation.
  2. HUMANITY: The history of ideas about human nature in anthropology, psychology, religion, and philosophy as well as in literature and common sense.
  3. ART: The history of ideas in literature and the arts in aesthetic theory and literary criticism.
  4. HISTORY: The history of ideas about or attitudes to history, historiography, and historical criticism.
  5. POLITICS: The historical development of economic, legal, and political ideas and institutions, ideologies and movements.
  6. RELIGION and PHILOSOPHY: The history of religious and philosophical ideas.
  7. MATH and LOGIC: The history of formal mathematical, logical, linguistic and methodological ideas.
