An "electronic library" of photos, audio clips, and written stories from the Associated Press. It includes the current year's photo report and a selection of images dating from the 1840s. The Multimedia Archive contains over 700,000 photos, most of which are contemporary images made since late 1995, and grows daily as hundreds of new photos enter the Multimedia Archive from AP's worldwide picture report. The Archive features two photo databases:
- an International photo archive which features state, regional and national photos from North America, as well as the best of the international photo report. About 500 new photos a day move into this database.
- a Euro/Asian photo archive, which features regional photos from Europe and Asia, some with foreign-language captions.
There is a 48 hour delay in receiving current photographs.
A separate database containis graphics, maps, illustrations and logos prepared by Associated Press graphic artists. They can be downloaded and opened as PDF files. The graphics database dates from January 1999 and is updated daily with approximately 20 graphics from the AP graphics report. A small selection of Spanish-language graphics are included in the graphics database.
The AP Audio Database contains over half a million searchable audio clips dating back to the 1920s, with clips as recent as 48 hours. Over 300 news, sports, entertainment and business clips are added to the archive each day! There is a 48 hour delay in receiving the current audio files.
The AP Text Database contains more than 700,000 pieces of text from the Associated Press, the world's oldest and largest newsgathering organization. There is a 48 hour delay in receiving the current text files. These full-text articles detail events at the time they occurred, as reported by the Associated Press staffers.
Software requirements: "To access the Photo Archive on the Internet, you need a PC or Mac and Netscape
Communicator 4.04 or better or Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 or better (PC only)."
Conditions of Use:
- Printed resolution is 72 dots per inch. The provision of higher resolution images is not provided for.
- You can print copies for book reports, term papers, theses, class handouts, and for research.
- Inclusion in PowerPoint presentations/overheads/slides for educational use and personal professional use are
allowed.
- Inclusion on a campus web site for institutional use is allowed.
- Do not use AP photos for publishing in newspapers, magazines, brochures, catalogs, commercial announcements,
calendars, posters, yearbooks, playbills, newsletters, on T-shirts, or promotional items, or for commercial use or
gain of any kind.
