(American Civilization)
Access Info: Ask for materials at Alden Library Microforms Dept.

"American Civilization" is an well-compiled collection of materials relating to virtually all aspects of American life & literature up to World War I. This set contains roughly 6,500,000 pages of material including books, pamphlets, periodicals, biographies and autobiographies, fictional works, poetry, collection of various kinds, and selected federal, state, and local documents. Some non-U. S. materials are included.

The set is strong in content and bibliographic access, but the format (ultrafiche) is sometimes difficult to read or copy. These 'ultrafiche' are laminated 3x5 sheets containing up to 1000 pages, items are arranged by "LAC" number. Much of the material has been cataloged on ALICE, but browsing the guides will provide an overview of the collection; four volumes -- author, title, subject and "biblioguide" Indexes. The Biblioguide volume in particular is useful in focusing your research. It starts with broad topics and provides and increasingly narrow focus. It also indexes chapters and journal articles.

Printed guides are available in Alden Library's Microforms and Reference Departments with the calll number Z1236 .L5 1971.

The 21,000 ultrafiche have the call number CB5.L53x. Please ask at Microforms Desk--the staff can point out appropriate reading machines and assist with copying.

Many titles from the LAC are also available online. Librarians at Quinnipiac University have compiled a list of these, with links to the online source.
